The Shape of Stillness: How VISBOOM Helped Me Rediscover My Creative Voice
Wiki Article
At times during my artistic journey, it has felt as if I have been slowly retreating behind my artwork. The images I create show emotion and passion, sometimes even an element of audacity; however, my efforts to create art were no longer connected to the person I really was. Most of the time, it felt as though I was creating without any true motivation, trying to keep up with trends and models that did not resonate with me personally. My creativity was now approximately disciplined, standardised, and efficient; however, it was completely devoid of anything that made it uniquely me. What I did not understand was that I had become so far removed from who I was that whenever I found myself inspired, I did not have a clue how to react.
When I started creating my personal project ~ ”Rooms I Have Left Behind,” I started to realize that there was a disconnect between what I wanted to achieve and what I produced. Each piece was intended to tell a story about my emotional relationship with the space I was photographing; the photographs I captured were devoid of any connections or relationships to the emotion. The colours seemed artificial, the composition wasn’t natural, and the emotional core was missing. It was like trying to photograph a dog in the backyard – you can see the dog standing outside, but you cannot capture the emotion that you felt standing there. There was a time when I thought about how the original intention of each image was to be an object of remembrance, not an object of memory. In that moment of hopelessness, apart of me broke silently.
At this time, another artist recommended to me that I test different versions of my scenes through VISBOOM. I'd seen VISBOOM used in the past for various kinds of creative projects, such as using AI to create 3D models, or using AI for clothing try-on in fashion; however, I wasn't quite sure how I would be able to use VISBOOM's capabilities to create memory-based art which was both personal and nuanced.
But I wanted to get started on something; I was eager to have an approach that would allow me to connect with my emotions. So I uploaded just one photo of one of the rooms where I lived for four years- it was a place filled with laughter, loneliness, growth, and silence, all of it at the same time.
From the instant that VISBOOM provided me with the first variation of my project, I began to experience an internal transformation. As I worked with the application to modify the background of my room and as I manipulated different moods for my room (through my experimentation with VISBOOM), the colours around me began to have an emotional quality that were similar to those of memories that I had forgotten over time. Each background I generated through VISBOOM revealed a different level of emotional truth regarding that room, and for the first time while using VISBOOM, I felt that I was not only capturing the space itself through video; I was also conveying my own feelings about the place itself.
This is when I understood that VISBOOM was not taken away my voice as an artist, rather it enhanced it.
In my further investigation of VISBOOM, I experimented with using AI Pose Changer on old photographs of myself. For many years, self-portraiture had been a challenge because I couldn’t maintain an expression that I could fully comprehend. However, with the use of AI Pose Changer on old portraits, it became possible to modify how I expressed my feelings. After making small changes to the position of my body, altering my shoulders, or softening my eye gaze, I began to see other versions of myself that visualized my emotions in a way that I had never seen before. Each alteration created an entirely different persona for me. These life-like examples did not perfectly match the image captured by a camera; instead, they were based on emotional experiences that I had never discussed or shared.
From this experience, I gained a better understanding of who I am as a creative being. For many years, I assumed that emotional expression could only occur through grandiose displays or wild brush strokes and paint application. What I learned about myself through VISBOOM’s precise application of lighting is that being able to create and appreciate the subtleties of lighting, created emotional depth to my work as well. Using VISBOOM to manipulate subtleties of shadowing and highlights allowed me to develop a new way of seeing, one that focused on subtleties rather than spectacle.
The experience that was most shocking was the moment I found old sketches from many years ago that had been abandoned and never finished. Many of these unfinished sketches were messy or awkward copies of ideas that I once liked, but could not understand enough to develop. When I uploaded those sketches into VISBOOM application, I had no expectations of what kind of new imagery/inspiration might be generated. I was amazed to see that VISBOOM produced alternate designs based on my original drawings which retained my original intent while also adding emotional clarity to the final design presentation as well as enhancing the atmosphere and structural components of each design. Some designs resulted in airy open "dream" type images while others produced darker, more reflective styles. I felt like my younger self has waited a long time for someone else to complete those drawings that I had started so many years earlier.
Through this process I started viewing creativity differently – instead of it being about developing the "next best thing", it is now a process of recognizing small details all around you through continued observation/a methodical approach to creative work. Things such as how dust collects on a table, how a curtain hangs when the sun's rays are shining on it, or how the texture of an old paint job has changed. These items that once represented limitations, can be considered portals into greater emotional depths than what most artists recognize. Through VISBOOM, I was provided access to these hidden emotions located within the detail of each object’s moment created through time.
The greatest shift in my life wasn’t necessarily how I completed a project; what changed was how I viewed “being in a state of reflection.” I used to dread having time without anything on my plate to accomplish; when sitting in silence it felt like I had wasted my time and nothing around me would inspire me. As VISBOOM brings to light how our subconscious mind absorbs every detail, I’ve learned to value the power of silence and allow me to find wholeness within silence during creation. Silence has begun to function as an ally and has allowed me to be open and vulnerable.
What I have been creating recently has started to have a more predictable quality about them. Pieces created several months ago, all possess a subtle combination of the same rhythm. I no longer feel pressure to find inspiration. I let it come naturally and don’t try to rush it through observation.
Overall, VISBOOM has enabled me to create images that represent my feelings; but more than that, through VISBOOM's assistance, I have rediscovered who I am as a creator, and learned how to listen to my art and find profundity in even small, seemingly insignificant aspects of it, as well as trusting my instincts. Through my journey to discover the subtle beauty in my art, VISBOOM served as a guide by reminding me that creative expression doesn't always arise from dramatic or profound inspiration; but sometimes, it can come from the simplicity of finding inner peace or silence.
